1	Draw the character in AutoCAD using lines, arcs and circles. Draw it the way you want it to appear on a layer named "DOWN".
2	Add lines on a layer named "UP" for pen-up movements to provide spacing between characters and to reposition the "pen".
3	AutoFont will prompt you to select the objects that make up the character and will create and write the code to a .SHP file.
4	Run the AutoCAD "COMPILE" command which will quickly convert the .SHP file to a .SHX file ready to use.

You need custom fonts

Commercial third-party fonts

They're great! They are also copyright. Most commercial font licenses allow you to use them on a single machine. When you send your drawings out to associates and plotting bureaux, the only way they will see what you see in your drawing is if they have the same font files. Fonts are externally referenced in AutoCAD and to send commercial font files is a breach of your license.

Transferring font files with drawing files is illegal. Sharing fonts across multiple machines in your office is illegal unless you have a site licence. Getting caught could end your career.
