School Profile
EII of Australia's Melbourne school was opened in April 1998 as a subsidiary of EII Japan, whose head office
is located in Tokyo.
EII's founder, Mr. Yasunori Ishii, has been involved in the research of teaching Japanese
as a second language for over 30 years. With the opening of EII of Australia, Mr. Ishii is
fulfilling his objectives to provide intensive training for Japanese language teachers, and to promote a
deeper understanding and appreciation of both the Japanese language and culture.
EII of Australia's Melbourne school - located in the city centre on Flinders Lane - is committed to providing
quality Japanese language tuition. Class sizes are restricted to a maximum of eight
students enabling full class participation and individualised attention. EII offers a range of courses and group
classes that cater to all skill levels from beginners through to advanced. Individual,
conversation and corporate classes are also available. All classes are taught by native
speakers, who have undergone the rigorous training involved, to become an EII teacher of
Japanese.
EII's Internship Program
EII of Australia also operates an 'Internship Program' in cooperation with the Victorian Department of
Education. EII trained Japanese language teachers are placed in a Primary or Secondary school or University within
Victoria, to act as assistant to the Japanese LOTE teacher on a voluntary basis. EII's Assistant Teacher Interns
provide students with a deeper understanding of the Japanese language and culture, as well as assisting the teacher
with linguistic clarifications, pronunciation correction, and preparation of lessons and necessary materials. The
Intern Program has proved to be a major success, with over two hundred interns and
approximately sixty schools having taken part to date, and most schools choosing to continue to host an EII Intern
on a regular basis.
EII's Annual Speech Contest
Another of EII of Australia's regular events is the annual EII Speech Contest which was first held in 1993.
With participants from all over Victoria, of differing ages and Japanese language abilities, EII's Speech Contest
is an excellent opportunity for keen students of Japanese to test their skills while competing for the major prize
of a fully-paid study-trip to Japan. Major Prize winners are flown to Japan, courtesy of EII, for a two week study
tour, including an opportunity to visit the five EII Japanese Language Schools throughout Japan. By providing this
opportunity for students of Japanese, EII hopes to further reduce the cultural and language barriers between Japan
and the rest of the world.
