After the sixth freight train derailment in eighteen months, suspicions are raised that someone with a personal vendetta must be behind them. And indeed, the suspicions are well founded. Umberto Alvarez, who lost his wife and two children in a railway crossing accident, has been seeking (and exacting) his revenge ever since. These derailments, however, are only the precursor to his ultimate goal of bringing the company he believes is responsible for the death of his family to its knees. He has a plan to switch his focus to a passenger train, and not just any passenger train, but the new F-A-S-T Track train.
Peter Tyler is an ex-homicide cop, investigating a murder that has occurred on a freight train. He's working side-by-side with Nell Priest, who works for the train company on which the murder occurred. These two must track down what actually happened on the train and find out who the murderer was. It's from this beginning that they find themselves on Alvarez's trail and heading into much more than they bargained for.
Parallel Lies runs just like the trains in the novel; eases out at first, picks up speed, rushes to an exciting climax, and slows to a satisfying stop. The main players are given just enough depth to make them real and Pearson does a wonderful job of shifting the reader's sympathies from the good guys to the bad guys. In fact, one is never quite sure who is wearing the white hat in this very solid read.
Well worth the fare. You'll enjoy the trip.
