Earlier this year, we broke with tradition in the New releases section by reviewing Let's Go Play At The Adams', a book that had been released 25 years ago.
The reason? Well, it's the unauthorised sequel to Let's Go Play At The Adams', and it's a terrific read.
Picking up the story where the original novel finished, we follow the Freedom Five gang as their well-planned cover-up plan goes suddenly very wrong indeed. To give too much of the story away, would spoil it for readers who loved the original book. Needless to say, right from page one there's twists and turns to the plot that the reader would never have suspected.
Game's End is written in the same style as Let's Go Play At The Adams' and Schneebeli must be congratulated for being able to step into Johnson's shoes to make the sequel read and feel like the first novel.
But this is where the similarities end. If anything Schneebeli has managed to take the Freedom Five story to the next level and become even more involved in the characters, their thoughts and feelings. You'll learn to love and hate the characters, but also realise the humanity of the whole situation.
Game's End is not a B-movie type rip-off novel. Don't expect more torture and mad babysitter-killing sprees...you won't find that here. What you will find is an engaging character study that looks at the consequences of the actions of Freedom Five, on both the members of the gang, their families, and the victims as well.
