Careers for Your Characters by Obstfeld and Neumann

Creating realistic, well-developed characters that readers can believe in is one of the biggest challenges authors face. And while actually going out and speaking to people in a given profession is certainly the best way to learn more about it, this book at least points you in the right direction and gives you an idea of where to begin.

Packed inside are detailed descriptions for the ninety-nine most written-about professions - and that includes ad executives to waiters.

Each entry is well structured and easy to follow, consisting of a written description and a breakdown of the fine details, including education, salary, jargon, hazards, rewards and a typical daily schedule.

Sure, it won't be 100% correct for wherever you are in the world, but at least it gives you a ball-park to play in. Read about a particular profession and see if it suits your needs, then go out and hunt down someone in the profession for the most important details.

A fun and useful reference guide all writer's should have.
