Writer's Guide to Places by Don Prues and Jack Heffron

Writers looking for information on North American locales for their fiction will find Prues and Heffron's book a handy guide. With chapters on all 50 states and one or more cities within those states, as well as several Canadian provinces, the book is teeming with historical and cultural facts, some well known, others more obscure.

Included are such things as:

• Basic ethnic, religious and economic issues that shape characters
• Regional history and facts their character might know
• Their character’s favorite food and drink
• Things their character may be proud or ashamed of concerning his or her birthplace
• Interesting places to set a scene
• Myths about the state
• Resources for further research

The city chapters expand on the more general state ones, detailing neighborhoods and famous locales as well as renowned denizens and historical figures.

Though it is very clearly an introduction to the locales and not a comprehensive guide, the "For Further Research" section in each chapter that will lead the reader to fiction, nonfiction, movies, and Web sites that have more information about the state or city in question.

Nothing beats visiting a location to get the real "vibe" but if you can't afford the plane ticket, this reference work is the next best thing.
